Hi @taeho,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Ready Download 2" message on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183fw typically indicates that the printer is in bootloader mode and is awaiting a firmware update. However, the Fatal Error 52 usually refers to a laser scanner issue, which can prevent the firmware update from completing.

Perform a Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 5 minutes.
  4. Reconnect the power cable directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  5. Turn on the printer and check if the error clears.

Try a Different Firmware Update Method

If the error persists, use a USB firmware update instead of a network update:

  1. Download the latest firmware from HP’s official website.
  2. Install HP Easy Firmware Upgrade Utility on your PC.
  3. Connect the printer via USB cable.
  4. Run the firmware update tool and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • If Fatal Error 52 remains after the firmware update, it could indicate a laser scanner failure.
  • Open the printer’s access panels (if comfortable) and check if there’s dust or obstruction around the laser scanner unit (LSU).
  • If cleaning does not help, the LSU may need replacement.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

can you give me more information about :

  • If Fatal Error 52 remains after the firmware update, it could indicate a laser scanner failure.
  • Open the printer’s access panels (if comfortable) and check if there’s dust or obstruction around the laser scanner unit (LSU). how to open it ? is it on the top or i have to open completely the printer for access to LSU ?
  • If cleaning does not help, the LSU may need replacementCan you give me a reference and where can i buy it one ?

I try your solution and nothing move, i have the same error. I see "downloding" in the printer but when i try to flash and before the end i have the fatal error 52 on the screen of my printer. i suppose it s the lsu hardware problem ? i never use the scan and my printer have one years and nothing work and my warranty just expired, it s very bad for this king of laserjet printer

Hi @taeho,

Thank you for your response,

It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183fw has a laser scanner unit (LSU) failure, especially since the firmware update fails and you keep getting Fatal Error 52.

Accessing the Laser Scanner Unit (LSU)

The LSU is located inside the printer, near the toner cartridge area. Accessing it requires partial disassembly of the printer. Here's a general guide:

Steps to Open the Printer and Access the LSU

⚠️ Caution: This requires disassembly, which may void any remaining warranty. If you're not comfortable, consider professional repair.

  1. Turn off and unplug the printer: Remove the power cord and any connected cables.
  2. Remove the toner cartridges: Open the front panel and take out all toner cartridges.
  3. Remove the top cover:
    • There may be screws under the scanner unit (if applicable).
    • Some covers have plastic clips that you need to carefully pry open.
  4. Locate the LSU:
    • The Laser Scanner Unit is a metal or plastic-enclosed box near the middle-back of the printer.
    • It may have a ribbon cable connecting it to the mainboard.
  5. Inspect for dust or obstructions:
    • Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean the area.
    • Check if the LSU’s mirror is misaligned or blocked.
  6. Reassemble and test: Put everything back, plug in, and turn on the printer.

Where to Buy a Replacement LSU

  • Official HP Parts Store: HP Parts Store
  • Third-Party Sellers:
    • eBay
    • Amazon

The exact LSU part number for your printer might be found in the service manual or on the LSU itself after opening the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
