A consistent problem since purchase 2 years ago of HP Officejet Pro 8740 is that the driver just disappears.  This last time I all of a sudden had an HP Officejet Pro 8740 (copy 1) and it didn't work.  The computer did not recognize the printer, even after I finally was able to get it to recognize the IP address I entered.  Finally deleted program and reinstalled through easy update.  Now the HP Smart program recognizes the printer, but Windows does not.  Printer name does not exist, even as (Copy 1).  When I try to print test I get Error Code 0x00000709 add printer's name.  And where can I add the name?

Hi

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.

Can you try this:

* *Note that if there are other printers installed, these will need to be reinstalled after this.

Step 1. Uninstall the HP Software from your PC.

Please follow the steps provided to uninstall the printer software in the link: Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02259020

Also, please follow the steps provided below to completely remove the printer software from printer properties.
Steps to remove printer driver files from Print Server Properties:

Step 2. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing one of the following:
• Click the Start menu and in the search field type 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click it in the search list.
• Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.
• From the Start menu or the Start screen:
• Open Devices and Printers.
• Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window.
• Click on the Drivers tab.

Step 3. Backup your registry before making any registry changes, the following resource will show you how:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03485724

Step 4. Update the registry using the Reg file below
Note: this will change some printer related policies for your PC):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/avbv56zdgwv7600/kernel.reg?dl=1

Step 5. Right click the Start menu and select Run.
Type Services.msc and press OK.
Locate and stop the Print Spooler service

Step 6. Browse to c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers.
Rename W32X86 to W32x86.old
Rename x64 to x64.old
Note: if any of these folders fail to rename reboot your PC and then Continue following the steps starting from Step 5.

Step 7. Restart PC.

Step 8. Finally, reinstall the HP Software.

Hope that helps!

Hi Greenturtle.  I followed your steps and my printer is still not recognized.  I even attached an ethernet cable, and it is not recognized.

Below is what i copied about the driver for HP Officejet Pro 8740 [F4A159}

Device SWD\IPP\c917ef29-65f0-d91d-8320-dd1a5b500455 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

Last Device Instance Id: SWD\DAFUPnPProvider\uuid:6c9eea11-45d6-3f20-8139-f28cc5c95c6f

Location Path:
Migration Rank: 0xF000FFFF8000F120

Status: 0xC0000719

When I click on Driver Details it states "No driver files are required or have been  loaded for this device."  Driver Provider is Microsoft.  Driver Date 6/21/2006 for all instances of this HP model.  I have not owned this printer or computer since 2006.

I tried downloading the driver 2x and neither recognized the printer.

I am flummoxed!  Any other ideas?

Hi @Tiger_Lily

Are you able to print using the WIndows In-OS drivers?  Seems that something happened when the Windows was updated.

If you're able to print, then try using this for Scan:

HP Scan Extended

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Hope that helps!

HP Community, Microsoft Community and speaking to a tech, and Frontier Pro Tech were contacted to solve the problem.  One of the 3 tried to correct  printer error through accessing "services.ms".  After none of the above found the cause of the break in communication I went back to "services.ms" and stopped and started:  Connected Devices Platform, Network Connected Devices, Network Connections, Print Spooler (which one of the 3 companies tried before), Wi-Fi Direct Services Connection.  After that I went to Devices and Scanners and clicked on "+Devices", which was above the printers and devices that are recognized.  Then I clicked "add a printer" and the HP Officejet Pro 8740" showed up!  I was working on a document prior to doing this and the printer was not listed; afterwards it listed and printed.  I may or may not have restarted my computer after stopping and starting services.ms.

I want to thank greenturtle for pointing me in a good direction to start.  Learned alot along the way.  Wish I could say exactly which service, that I started and stopped, made the difference.  And yes, I do believe it had to do with the 1/12/2019 Windows update or their security updates on the same date.
