HP LaserJet Pro M404dn
Ubuntu LTS

I use an HP Laserjet Pro m404dn (no ePrint!). My operating system is Kubuntu 24.04, but I also use a Mac mini (OS Sequoia) and Windows 11. I use the the system settings (printers) of Kubuntu to configure the printer. However, I cannot permanently change the name of the Laserjet here, not even with the command 'system-config-printer'. This is also not possible with the Hplip Toolbox. However, the printer is also registered with HP online and listed in the HP Support Dashboard. Here you can obviously change the printer name. However, I don't know whether this has any effect on other PCs in the local network and whether the HP Laserjet has to be set up again on these. Can someone here help me and explain what the management of HP printers via the HP Support dashboard is all about? Does this give you control over an HP printer on the local network? I don't need any web services on the printer.

Any help appreciated!

I think I have the solution. I have installed the same HP printer using two different methods. One is with Hplip. I can change the name of the HP printer created with this method. Secondly, the HP printer was installed by CUPS. CUPS scans the network printers and the local printers in the background. If I delete the printer created in this way, CUPS immediately recreates it. I hope I am right with my assumptions. If I am wrong, please correct me and let me know.

Concerning the Canon printer, it is creates by CUPS and not by using a Canon driver. So, the above mentioned problem does not occur.

Pleas corrrect me, in case I am wrong.
