I manage several HP printers for my works office.
it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify them. so I'm looking to rename each one using the IP browser interface.
I don't want users to have to rename the printer on their PC's,
"HP UPSTAIRS LARGE OFFICE" is a better name than "HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw".
I've factory reset one as a test bed and am in the process of renaming it. but the name I assign never stays, whenever I re-load the page the default comes back.
- Bonjour Service Name
- Host Name
- Domain Name
and any other name that might appear.

Hi @JA-HELP,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to rename your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer through the IP browser interface without forcing users to manually update the printer name on their PCs, follow these steps:
Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address to access its EWS page.
Modify the Bonjour and Hostname Settings:
- In the EWS, go to the Networking or Network Settings tab.
- Look for Bonjour Settings or Network Identification (depending on the firmware version).
- Change the Bonjour Service Name to "HP UPSTAIRS LARGE OFFICE" (or any descriptive name you prefer).
- Change the Host Name to the same name, if applicable.
Disable DHCP Hostname Overwriting:
- In some network environments, DHCP can override your custom hostname settings. To prevent this:
- Go to the TCP/IP Settings (usually under Networking).
- Disable the option for the DHCP server to assign the printer's hostname automatically.
- Save the settings.
Restart the Printer:
- After making these changes, restart the printer to apply them fully.
Check the Persistence of the Name:
- Re-access the EWS after the printer restarts to ensure the new name persists.
What Users See on Their PCs:
- Windows Users: The new name should reflect automatically in the Printers and Scanners section on their PCs, especially if they are using Bonjour or automatically discovered network printers.
- Manually Added Printers: If users manually add the printer using the original name, they may need to refresh the printer list or reconnect using the new name, but it won't require major reconfiguration.

I hope this helps.
