Hi @TKW29,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re looking to reset your HP Color LaserJet Pro M282-M285 to factory settings. Let’s go through the steps to perform a proper reset.

Restart the printer before you begin
Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
This ensures no settings or menus are stuck.

Open the Setup Menu on the printer’s touchscreen
Tap the gear icon (Setup).
Scroll down to access the Service or Printer Maintenance options.

Select Service → Restore Defaults
Choose “Restore Defaults” or “Factory Reset.”
Confirm when prompted — the printer will reboot automatically.

What the reset includes
Network settings, custom preferences, and saved data are cleared.
Printing, scanning, and fax defaults return to original factory configuration.

Reconnect the printer after reset
Rejoin Wi-Fi or Ethernet from Network Setup on the display.
Reinstall the printer on your computer or mobile device if needed.

Print a Configuration Page (optional)
From Setup → Reports → Configuration Page.
This confirms everything reset successfully.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm afraid this did not work.

I have reset using a hard reset. The screen no longer works and I cannot use my printer. The on light is on but no functions.

I have unplugged and waited 30 seconds, plugged in  - still no screen.

I have attached the printer to my Macbook using a cable - still no screen and printer not recognised.

I have tried to find it using the IP address - not recognised.

Advice please! Thanks Tracey

Hi @TKW29,

Thanks for getting back to us.

I understand the printer’s display is now completely unresponsive after a hard reset, and the device is not being detected by your Mac or through the network. Let’s go through a few checks to see what might be causing this.

1. Perform a full power reset
– Turn the printer off and unplug the power cable from both the printer and the wall.
– Wait at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
– Plug the cable directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).

2. Check the control panel response
– Press the Power button once after reconnecting.
– See if the HP logo or any backlight appears for even a moment.
– If the screen stays completely black, it indicates the panel isn’t initializing.

3. Try powering with a different wall outlet
– Move the printer to a different room/outlet.
– This helps rule out low voltage or grounding issues.

4. Disconnect all cables and accessories
– Remove USB, Ethernet, and any USB storage devices.
– Power the printer with only the power cable attached.
– A faulty cable can sometimes freeze the startup sequence.

5. Check for fan or motor activity on startup
– When powering on, listen for any internal sounds (fan spin, rollers).
– If the printer lights up but makes no startup noise, the system board may not be completing POST.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Again.

I have tried all stages of your advice and the screen is still blank  - no light, no HP logo. The fan does make a noise when the printer is turned on though.

I still cannot use it as unable to access the screen.

Any other advice?

Thanks, Tracey
