I recently was replacing the black ink cartridge in my 7740 and noticed a firmware upgrade was available. After replacing the cartridge (with an OEM HP 952XL) and upgrading the firmware to EDWINXPP1N002.2436F.00 (2024-09-06), the next set of prints were only in a smeary black & white. I've tried replacing all the other cartridges (including the black one I just replaced), resetting to factory settings, running multiple head cleaning and alignment cycles, and power cycling the printer (as well as unplugging it). The print quality has slightly improved, but isn't printing a clean test page with all the colors and color prints are very muddy. Is there a way I can roll back the firmware to see if that addresses the issue? I downloaded 002.2436F (2024-10-23) from the drivers page for that printer; however when I try and install it, I get the message "This firmware updater doesn't contain upgrades for your device". Other than trying to change the firmware, is there anything else I should try?

Hi @davebunte
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
1. Re-Check Ink Cartridge Installation
- Even though you’ve replaced the ink cartridges, sometimes cartridges might not be seated properly. Double-check that all cartridges (especially the black and color cartridges) are correctly installed and locked into place.
- Ensure that the protective tape on the cartridges (if any) was removed before installation.
2. Run Print Head Cleaning and Alignment Again
To run the cleaning cycle:
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead (depending on your model, the wording might vary slightly).
- Run both Standard Cleaning and Deep Cleaning if necessary.
- After cleaning, align the printheads by going to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Printheads.
3. Check for Firmware Rollback Options
- Print Quality Settings: Make sure that your print quality settings are set to high quality (or your preferred setting) and not set to economy or draft mode, which could lead to poor printing results.
- Cartridge Settings: Sometimes after a firmware update, printers may need to recalibrate the ink usage settings. Try checking if your printer recognizes the 952XL cartridges properly.
4. Check for Ink Smearing and Paper Type
5. Perform a Hard Reset
- If nothing seems to work, try performing a hard reset on the printer. To do this:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 1-2 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in, power it on, and test again.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I am having a similar issue. I tried all the steps you outlined and even downgraded the firmware to 1849A. Still getting error that printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. Using 952XL HP cartridges. Any way to get a download of the original factory firmware?
