Hi @CJ2051, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Install the Printer/Scanner Drivers

  • Download Drivers: First, ensure you have the latest drivers for your HP DeskJet 4200e.
    • Go to the official HP support page: HP DeskJet 4200e Drivers
    • Select the correct operating system (Windows, macOS, etc.).
    • Download the recommended software and drivers for your printer.
  • Install the Drivers: Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install both the printer and scanner drivers.
    • Make sure to choose the full driver installation option to get the software for scanning as well.

Connect Your Printer/Scanner

  • USB Connection: If you’re connecting via USB, plug the cable from the printer into an available USB port on your computer. Ensure that the printer is powered on.
  • Wireless Connection: If you prefer a wireless setup, follow these steps:
    • Connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network by following the instructions in the printer's manual or using the HP Smart app (available for both Windows and mobile devices).
    • After that, connect your computer to the same Wi-Fi network.

Set Up HP Smart Software

  • Install HP Smart (Recommended for managing scanning and printing tasks):
    • Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store (Windows) or the App Store (macOS).
    • Open the app and follow the prompts to add your printer.
    • You will also be able to access scanning features from this app, including setting up shortcuts for scanning tasks.

Create a Scanner Icon on Your Desktop (For Windows)

  • Option 1: Manually Creating a Scanner Shortcut:
    1. Search for the scanner app:
      • Click on Start Menu and type "Windows Scan" (for the built-in scanner app in Windows) or the name of the software installed by HP.
    2. Create a shortcut:
      • Right-click on the software icon in the search results.
      • Select Open file location.
      • In the file location folder, right-click on the app and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
  • Option 2: Using HP Smart:
    • Open HP Smart and look for the scanner options.
    • You can drag or pin the scanner icon to your Start Menu or Taskbar, making it easier to access.

Testing the Scanner

  • Open the Scan software (depending on your setup).
  • Place a document or image on the scanner bed.
  • Select the scanning preferences (color, resolution, format).
  • Press Scan to test the scanner's functionality.

Create a Shortcut for Easy Access (If Using HP Smart)

  • Pin to Taskbar: If you use the HP app frequently, right-click the HP software and choose Pin to Taskbar for easy access.
  • Pin to Start: Right-click on the software and select Pin to Start to create a tile in the Start menu for quick scanning.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
