How long would one expect HP 8600 SETUP cartridges for, and with, a new printhead, to last? I mean, would it be much shorter than regular replacement cartridges we get from OfficeMax, Walmart or HP? What would you say percentage-wise?
While I am at it, what should I do to recycle my old printhead?
Thanks!

Hi @bd64kcmo
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
The HP 8600 SETUP cartridges are specifically designed to initialize your printer and might have a different yield compared to regular replacement cartridges. Generally, SETUP cartridges are not intended to last as long as standard replacement cartridges.
The yield can be significantly lower—often by around 30-50% less than standard cartridges you purchase from stores like OfficeMax, Walmart, or directly from HP.
Recycling Old Printheads
Here is how you can recycle your old printhead:
Remove and Package the Old Printhead:
- If you have a postage-paid mailing label and return envelope from HP, use those to send your old printhead back to HP for analysis.
- If no mailing label was provided, you can recycle the old part by putting it into a plastic bag.
Return the Printhead to HP:
- Place the ink absorbing pad into the plastic package that the new printhead came in.
- Put the old printhead, along with the cartridges still installed, into the plastic package and close it.
- Put the package containing the old parts into the box the new parts came in. If possible, include a print sample showing the issue with the old printhead.
- Seal the box, apply the post-paid mailing label, and mail the box.
Recycling Information:
- For more details on recycling programs, you can visit HP's recycling webpage.
This ensures that the old printheads are disposed of responsibly and can be analyzed to improve future products.
Edit: User mentioned the cartridges are working fine.
