m254dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am connected USB, running win 10 64bit. Just uninstalled printer and re-installed it to be sure.

config report says 20170510

download and run LaserJet_M254_dw_Series_FW_Update-20221207.nativeofficefonts.exe

which HP site says is latest firmware and only avail download.

Runs and shows smiley face after min or 2.

Still says 20170510.

How fix?

Thanks!

Never mind. Don't believe the instructions!

I have always used USB to print.

On a whim, I connected an RJ45 from my router to my m254dw.

voila, NOW the update option shows on the printer LCD.

It is updating them one at a time.

After the second update it presented me with the "don't use non-HP toners" LOL - I always use genuine.

It's on the 3rd update now...Just rebooted from that.

now says it is current at 20221207 which is correct.

So Now i will disconnect the RJ45 since I don't use net to print but I will probably check in a year or 2 to see if there are any new updates. 🙂

You should be able to update through USB but on some machines I have found the default is set to only allow downloaded firmware.

Sorry, just got your comment.

ONCE I HAD CONNECTED THE RJ45,

It then showed me the option to accept updates, and, indeed, it was set to OFF, so I had to set it ON before anything would go.

USB is a no-go for updates with my m254dw.
