OfficeJet Pro 8139e

I just installed a new OfficeJet Pro 8139e for a friend. It is hooked up to a stand-alone phone line for faxing. She wants it set up so that incoming faxes are automatically saved to her PC and not printed out. I thought this would be simple, but I can't seem to find the option for it. I was not prompted for anything related to it during the software installation process.

Everything else works. I just need to take care of this one thing. Thank you in advance. 😊

The Fax setup including a category for Fax Archive and Forwarding is available using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Fax > Fax Receive Settings

Section Fax > Fax Archive and Forwarding (includes Network folder as / when applicable)

Example - EWS - Fax - Archive and Forwarding

Hi Dragon-Fur,

Thank you for getting back to me. I will try this as soon as I can get back to my friend's computer and let you know how it goes.

Hello again, Dragon-Fur,

i tried to follow the steps you provided. However, the EWS seems to only offer the option of archiving to an email address. It is not giving me the option to save it to the PC itself or a network folder. Am I missing something? Please advise. Thank you.

Regards,

I think you are not missing anything -- your printer is a step-down from the OfficeJet Pro 91xx series --

Save to Fax > Network folder is perhaps not supported as shown in the posted example (NAS storage).

That said,

According to the User manual, Fax and Save to (Windows) computer is supported.

If you can get Archive to Email to work, there are limitations, including

  • Whether the Fax is color or Black/White.  (Color faxes will print.)
  • The full driver printer software should be installed on the Windows computer.
  • The destination (computer) must be awake, too - not sleeping, in hibernation, or switched OFF.

What if?

Using the Email archive option, you might run into the need to enable 2FA (2-step verification) in your email account and create an App Password to use in place of the regular email password for the email account that is expected to receive the emailed faxes.  What?  Most email provider security dislikes -- and has disabled  -- "Less Secure Apps"  -- The extra (2FA) security helps protect the email provider when accepting email from machines / apps.  ?

Printer - Full Feature Software

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

Note Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut
