Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm actually posting to inform HP about a possible SCAM. My friend (who is a senior citizen) called the 800 number and was apparently redirected to someone who called himself "John". She was having an issue with her printer and allowed him remote access to fix the issue after a fee of $199.00 that would "cover her for one year". The issue (printer) was apparently fixed but the next day he called her (I got on the other phone and  was listening) and he was stating that when he "fired up his system" he saw a "Red Alert" message about "serious issues" with Windows drivers. He said he look on his system and (allegedly) saw that it was my friends account. When he talked to her he was trying to convince her that because it wasn't an HP issue he would have to charge her $199.00 but it cover her for one year and he would have to download 45 files, etc. I got one the phone and let him know that I am and IT technician as well as a retired LEO, and he was full of it. I had my friend hang up on him. The number he was calling from was [personal information removed]. So others may know that number was used via "Ring Ring" which offers use of phone numbers for a fee. Just an FYI.

Hey @Quietstorm2020 🙂

I'm sorry this has happened to your friend.

As for scammers in the community:

Be alert for scammers who may be posing as HP support representatives, particularly those who claim to be “HP Helpdesk”.

Only call numbers from people who have a HP badge on their profile page.

If you think you have received a fake HP Support message, please report it to us by clicking on the blue "Report Inappropriate Content" button above the message in the Private Message portion of the Community.

Thank you!
