After a massive failure to communicate and print/scan reset after a lightning strike power outage: Scan currently 'names' all new scans prior to placement into folder the same 'wrong' name instead of OEM setting of Scan0001 (0002, 0003, 0004, etc).

Absolutely operator error: I must have reset something deep inside, when trying to make systems reconnect, but cannot re-locate the naming convention location. help?  I will need KISS step by step: path of system-> devices-> Printers & Scanners-> specific printer-> manage  or similar path to Advanced Settings is not availing me of a place to find how to reset.

You are welcome.

Yes, if you have the Printer Assistant shortcut on the Desktop, it seems likely (that) you have the full driver printer software installed in Programs and Features.

As long as you have something that will work for you - go with that.

If you would like to try it -

HP Scan and Capture is an application from the Windows Store.

The app is easy to use, fairly basic, and includes a couple of added options you might find useful on occasion.

Printer - Full Feature Software - Install

If you have not done so, consider

  • HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop:  Printer Assistant and HP Scan.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.  No Sign-in required.

If the full driver printer software is (already) installed but not working,

  • Uninstall any printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features
  • Restart the computer and sign in.

Next,

  • Check (for the Printer) in Devices and Printers  > If found, Right-Click Printer and Remove -- If any changes are made, that is, you remove anything, Restart the computer and sign in.I

Next,

  • If using a printer USB cable between the printer and the computer, disconnect the cable before installing the printer software.
  • Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software

Details Page - Driver - For your Printer

>>> Full Feature Software - Web Pack Installation Package - Information - Download  <<<

Installation

  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • If using a printer USB cable between the printer and the computer, connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Hi there - I am not computer savvy and found that in searching (type here to search) I found that I did have some software installed: don't know but think it is official. On my system is denoted by a proprietary/personalized name: the physical location /address literally the house in which the specific printer sits. I can't tell if that's the HP software you referenced. For whatever reason when I went back into the immediate HP Officejet Pro - HP Printer Assistant this time - and clicked Advanced Settings under save as PDF --   same path as prior under the Destination Tab I was able to locate Base File name, which had a prior  one-time only "intended file save name" inserted. I wiped that out and left that space blank - the system is now recording as 0001.pdf - not scan 001 but close enough!!! Your tip may have broken its evil spell.

**I thank you greatly for the very detailed advisory**

Thanks again - GREAT VISUALS - most appreciated. My problem is I am fairly mobile and utilize different printers when on the road and a total of 5 different HP products/machines when drifting amongst family and friends - my current whatever it is IS now verified as an HP Assistant product. but works with all the older machines I encounter.  I'm slightly afraid to upgrade anything for fear of losing that connectivity.

You are most welcome.

Well, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

As long as the software works with your travels and moving about, that is the important thing.

When visiting family, if anything balks, it might be enough to "add Printer" to get the basics going.

Have a safe and excellent summer.
