How does one set the scanning default to PDF. I can scan and change it on the printer EACH TIME I scan a document - as it appears the default is JPEG - but I want it to be PDF default if at all possible. Seems silly that this isn't an option - I just can't figure it out.

Thank you!

Hi @cjulie24,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To set the default scanning format to PDF on the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 (or a similar model), you typically need to adjust the settings in the scanning software or through the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS). Here's how you can do it.

Using HP Smart Software

  1. Open the HP Smart App:
    • Ensure that the app is installed on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Select "Scan":
    • Go to the scanning section in the app.
  3. Change the File Format:
    • Select the file type (PDF in this case) and other preferences.
  4. Save the Settings:
    • Look for an option to set these preferences as default (varies by version of the software).

Using HP Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  1. Access EWS:
    • Find your printer’s IP address from the control panel or configuration page.
    • Open a web browser, type the printer’s IP address, and press Enter.
  2. Log In:
    • If prompted, log in with admin credentials.
  3. Navigate to Scan Settings:
    • Look for a section like Scan Defaults or File Settings.
  4. Set Default File Format:
    • Choose PDF as the default format and save the changes.

Using Printer Control Panel

If the printer itself allows setting default scan preferences:

  1. Navigate to Scan Settings from the control panel.
  2. Look for Default File Format or similar settings.
  3. Select PDF and save the changes.

HP Scan Software (on PC)

  1. Open the HP Scan Utility:
    • This is separate from HP Smart and might have more advanced features.
  2. Set Preferences:
    • In the scanning preferences or settings menu, change the file type to PDF.
  3. Save Defaults:
    • Save the settings for future scans.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you - it worked when I did it on the printer it's self and signed in with the PIN they give you - so I think I'm set now!
