HP Scanjet 4850
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I recently received an HP scanjet 4850, and I really want to use it to scan some film. I have tried everything to get this guy to work for me, but nothing does it. I haven't been successful with finding a driver for it to work, and I even have a windows 10 computer I have tried it on a number of times as well without any success. If you know how I can connect this to my mac and download a driver it would be unreal, if I have to use windows I still need a driver, but any help is appreciated because as of now its nothing but a pile of plastic. Thanks in advanced!

Hi,

You may try the 3rd party VueScan application, it may work without any driver but will be limited to Flatbed scans only (Transparencies scanning is not supported without an HP driver):

https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_scanjet_4850.html#technical-information

If it doesn't work, you may try installing the HP drivers for 10.6 and then see if Vuescan may work (assuming these can be installed, the version difference is quite too big)

If it doesn't work, give it a try on Windows, for Windows, there are better chances you may get it to work by using an older driver, the scanner is officially supported on Windows 8.1 or older versions, but there are good chances that a Windows 8.1  will work on Windows 10 too).

For your mac, try installing below drivers and see if these work:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL31539/sj-78355-5/HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.4_Ph5.dmg

For Windows 10, you may try below drivers:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL17369/cs-109719-1/setup_basic_4800_14-5.exe

you may try it at your own risk, however, these drivers haven't been tested and the scanner is not officially supported on any of the mentioned operating systems.
