I have an OfficeJet4650 All-in-One Printer. Replaced my old Windows OS with Linux, now my scanner can't transmit to PC. I had had some trouble with printing not finding the PC, but that seems to have resolved itself. But the same problem is still an issue for scanning. I lost my info for the printer, so if someone could help me so I can scan something to my PC I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi @AS-C

Thank you for posting your query, I will be happy to help you!

When you replace your Windows operating system with Linux, it can sometimes cause compatibility issues with peripherals like printers or scanners. Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue of your HP OfficeJet 4650 scanner not transmitting to your PC on a Linux system:

  1. Install HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing):

    • HPLIP is an open-source HP-developed solution that provides drivers and utilities for HP printers and scanners on Linux.
    • You can install it via your distribution's package manager. For example:
      • On Ubuntu, run: sudo apt install hplip
      • On Fedora, run: sudo dnf install hplip
  2. Configure the Printer/Scanner:

    • Use the HPLIP Toolbox (hp-toolbox) to configure and manage your HP devices. You can launch this application from your terminal by simply typing hp-toolbox.
    • Ensure your device is detected by the utility and properly configured.
  3. Check Permissions:

    • Ensure that your user has the necessary permissions to use the scanner. You can add your user to the ‘scanner’ group (if it exists) using:
      sudo usermod -a -G scanner <your-username>

  4. Verify USB or Network Connection:

    • If using a USB connection, ensure it is connected to a working port and is recognized by your system.
    • For a network connection, make sure that both your Linux PC and printer/scanner are connected to the same network.
  5. Scan from Linux:

    • Use a scanning application like Simple Scan or XSane to perform scanning operations.
    • Open the application, select the HP printer, and try scanning a document.
  6. Check Drivers:

    • Ensure that the appropriate SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) drivers are installed. You may need to install additional libraries or packages specific to SANE.

If these steps do not resolve the scanning issue, check the official HPLIP website for additional support or compatibility details.
