I am trying to scan legal size documents from the HP Smart app and although in the app you can select the Legal size when scanning it shows me an error message that says: The sheet feeder could not determine the size and that it is not closed.

Welcome to the HP Community --

"Not closed" might refer to the ADF not sensing the condition of the ADF .

Legal paper size, assuming the ADF detects the paper size, type, and weight correctly, is supported for single-sided scan.

If the ADF believes it is in an open position, this would certainly interfere with detecting the paper size, type, and weight.

What else?

Not sure --

If you can resolve the ADF Open error,

Check to make sure that HP Smart Scan > Source does not have "2-sided" selected

Set Scan Area as Legal -- or, if all else fails and you can do do, try Entire Scan Area

Example - HP Scan - Windows - Scan > Preset = Document

I don't see Legal Size in HP Smart > Mobile - iOS / iPadOS --

I cannot verify that the app would support the larger paper size.

If available, try Size = Auto
