How do you scan multiple page documents via the feeder to .pdf? Is double sided scanning possible?
10-01-2022 12:35 PM
Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
Automatic 2-sided scan is not supported on the Envy.
That said, the task can be done manually using the HP Smart Application or HP Scan (part of the full driver printer software).

Ok thanks. while I understand about double sided scanning. The main issue is multiple page scanning to pdf.
A single page scans OK. but I cannot get the system to scan multiple pages through the sheet feeder. The pages feed, but on a single page pdf is produced?

OK, Perhaps I did not understand the initial question.

ANDOk thanks. while
I understand about double sided scanning.
The main issue is multiple page scanning to pdf.
A single page scans OK. but
I cannot get the system to scan multiple pages through the sheet feeder.
The pages feed, but on a single page pdf is produced?
First, you did ask about 2-sided scanning --
Answered - Printer does not support automatic 2-sided scanning.
Do you have a 2-sided document you want to scan?
or
Do you have a single-sided document you want to scan?
==============================================================================
" I cannot get the system to scan multiple pages through the sheet feeder. "
Are you having trouble scanning multiple sheets?
Does "Cannot" mean the ADF is not working?
Is the ADF is not feeding the sheets through one at a time?
Answer
Clean the ADF in the printer: Automatic document feeder does not pick paper or feeds too many sheets
==============================================================================
" The pages feed, but on a single page pdf is produced?
Do the sheets feed through the ADF?
If yes,
The ADF is working
Are you asking a question: " Is a single page PDF is produced? "
Answer
If you WANT single page documents created from multiple sheet scan, HP Smart is not the right tool for the job.
Use HP Scan and separate the job into single documents.
==============================================================================
OR
Are you not asking a question --
Are you stating:
Each scanned sheet is creating a separate PDF file.
You want to scan all pages using the ADF into a single PDF document.
For example,
You are scanning a single sided document of more than one page to create a single PDF file
Answer
In this case you do not need any "add page" tricks -- using HP Smart, the pages will naturally form a single document
==============================================================================
OR
You are scanning a duplex (double sided) document
You want each side of each page scanned
AND
You want all sides of all pages saved into a single PDF document
Answer
In this case you must use the scan-one-page-flip-Add-Page method

What if?
Don't want to use HP Smart?
Answer
Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software (ask if you need help to do that).
Use HP Scan to scan a 2-sided document into a single PDF.

After scanning the first sides, a prompt with instructions on how to scan the other sides of the document displays. Click OK to scan the other sides.
The pages are automatically arranged in the correct order.
Select PDF as the file type, select a location to save the file to, and then click Save.

What if?
Use HP Scan to scan a multiple page document and (deliberately) separate each scanned page into a separate document

Wow what an answer!
The answer is I need to do both as I deal with all sorts of documents.
So I do not have HP scan - I have HP smart - which sometimes is not! This does not have the tabs you indicate.
I will now find and install.
Thanks for your help.

>>> Check / Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software
The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.
The driver includes HP Scan – HP Scan supports scanning / saving / printing your scan content.
Preparation
If you have not done so,
In addition to the HP Smart application,
Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.
HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.
Make sure your VPN is switched Off when installing the HP Smart application or the printer software.
Printer Software Check - Is the full driver printer software installed?
Notes
When the full driver printer software is installed,
Find the printer software listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.
The installation of the full printer software adds shortcut icons to the Desktop.
- The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools
- HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.
- Where supported, when installed as part of the HP Smart application, HP Smart Printing is a modern style print driver that supports printing for Images and Documents.

Reminder: If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software. (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.
Method - Use the Easy Start Software to Install HP Smart and / or the Full Feature / Full Driver Software
- Open Home Page - HP Easy Start >> Click to open Category Software and Drivers
- Download and Save the current version of the Easy Start Software installation package to install your print software
Easy Start can be used to install your printer software and / or the HP Smart application.
If you would like to do so,
If the HP Smart Application is not installed, Get a new copy of the application from the Microsoft Store
OR
If you want to install the full driver printer software, choose the "Full Software and Drivers" option during the installation procedure.
Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software
Preparation
- If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers
>>> After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers.

- If using VPN, shut it off to install software. NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.
- Reminder: If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software. Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).
- Observation: It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection. Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.
Installation
- Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
- Open File Explorer
- Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file (likely Downloads)
- Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator”
- After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in
If using Easy Start
- Skip any extra software / offers you do not want – Wording varies as does the number of times you have to “skip” or opt-out of various options.
- When asked, opt for "Full Software and Drivers" (exact wording might vary).
Easy_Start_Full_Driver_2
- If after the Full Software and Drivers option is selected, the installation terminates (suddenly stops and disappears – never comes back): Open your Downloads folder > Look for and Right-Click on the full Web installation package and “Run as Administrator”

- Download-Save-Install > NAPS2
- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
- Not always simple “Plug and Play”, nonetheless, this free software is powerful and configurable.
- NAPS2 might require that the full driver printer software is installed.
Notes
- Includes an OCR feature – may need Ghostscript add-on (See NAPS2 forum entry)
- Read the Support pages for information
- Read the Getting Started guide
- Combining files? Read the Command Line Usage guide > Select Combining and Converting Files
