Scanning with Envy 7855 and WIN 11

I have a new computer running Windows 11.  I was not able to scan with my Envy 7855 so I bought a new printer.  The quality of the new printer does not maatch the 7855.  I'm bummed.

Is there a driver available or a 'fix' for the 785 and WIN11?

Consider cleaning both the ADF and flatbed (glass and white panel backing.

Check / Apply Windows Updates 

• Check / Install any pending Windows Updates 
• If any updates are applied in Windows Updates, Restart your computer and log in

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

• Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
• If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
• Restart the computer and log in.

When available ...

The Offline Use Only, Print and Scan Driver, or similarly named installation web packs can be used in either a network‑connected or USB‑connected environment.

The name of the installation file depends on the printer model and the type of packaging.

This method includes the printer software in the installation package; hence the much larger file size.

You need not answer questions about which driver or type of printer software to select and install.

Using USB?

Be sure to unplug the USB cable between the printer and the computer before loading the software. 

Re-connect the USB cable when instructed to do so, generally near the end of the successful installation of the printer software.

Scanning is dependent on the source, flatbed as compared to ADF, connection type and quality of that connection, resources (printer, network, computer (device)).

Scanning is resource heavy -- that is, the printer to network connection must be stable, not overtaxed, and capable of completing the entire job without interruption.  Ethernet is better when available, 2.4GHz wireless might be better if necessary or if the printer is struggling on 5GHz -- Slower and stable is always better than faster and flaky.

Scanning is dependent on the application or software used.

HP App, for example, includes a range of Edit options and features to improve -- or at least change --  scanned content before that content is saved or shared (to email).

I was having trouble understanding your complicated reponse.  I thought I would look at my original post and see how I might reword it better...

TYPO!!

I have the Envy 7855 not the 785.  My bad.  I apologize for the confusion.

My Envy 7855 has worked flawlessly for years.  And it produces better quality than my new Epson ET-3493.  But the Epson is not a bad printer.  I would just really like to get back to the quality of the HP.

I could not do anything to get the WIN 11 to work with the scanning software...  I unistalled it and reloaded it.  No luck.  Operator error?

Honestly nothing has changed about how the full driver is (re)installed -- it's the same web pack from 2022 and installs the same way as it as done in the past.

Next,

The full driver, as you know, includes HP Scan.

The full driver -- and the HP Scan software to some extent -- depends on the rest of your printing environment.

If you cannot scan at all using the Envy at all, that is, even Windows Scan does not work --

and

If the problem is not mechanical (hardware failure),

and

If you have checked the printer's connection to your network and it is solid, functional, and supported,

and

If you have not done so,

Perhaps Reset the printer.

Next,

If you installed a different printer (Epson or even another HP), and that "other" printer is set as the Default Printer, you either need to redirect Windows to choose your Envy Photo 7855 as the printer you want to use during each job or you need to designate the Envy as the "Default Printer".  This is much easier to control if you -- and not Windows -- are controlling the Default Printer selection.

Scanning, like printing, depends on a "Driver" selection in Printer Properties.  If Printer Properties is pointing at (for example) the Epson's driver and not the HP's driver, any job that depends on the selected Driver in Printer Properties will behave oddly or fail outright to give you the results you expect.

If weird "problems" surface directly after an update -- or possibly even if no updates were applied -- check the Default Printer and the Printer Properties Driver assignments -- ensure the settings are as expected and needed.

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers and scanners

Scroll down to section Printer preferences

Windows protected mode = "Set up"  (equals "not configured")

Default install printers using Windows Ready Print = OFF

Switch OFF Let Windows manage my default printer

Scroll up > Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Set as Default

Check Printer Properties for the assigned Driver.  

The Driver should be set to your installed HP driver and not the IPP / Microsoft Drivers.

IPP / Microsoft Drivers do not provide access to all the printer's features, for example, Duplex and / or Color printing options.

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer

Printer Properties > Tab Advanced

• Driver:  Select the HP driver as opposed to the Microsoft / IPP class driver
• Reprint later:  Select Keep all documents
• All Jobs Default:  Printing Defaults
