HP Envy 5400
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I replaced a 10 year old multifunction printer with an HP Envy 5400. The main reason was that we have enough Apple devices where AirPrint became a needed function. This printer provides this function.

What boggles my mind is how HP decides NOT provide a way to save document as a SEARCHABLE PDF. I'm emphasizing SEARCHABLE, because I've seen many useless responses to this issue on other posts, because HP employees don't seem to grasp the concept that there is a huge difference between SEARCHABLE PDF and PDF.

PDF , is useless. There's no point in scanning a document and saving it as PDF. If the contents can't be searched , we may as well go back to a paper system and dive through a file cabinet when we need to find something.

There shouldn't even be an option to Save As PDF. It should only be SEARCHABLE PDF.

How could the engineers at HP miss this requirement? A document that isn't searchable is basically an image. It's completely useless.

It seems that as the years go on, the HP products get worse. My 10 year old multi function had a capability to save as...
WAIT FOR IT....

SEARCHABLE PDF!!!!!!

A friend downloaded a Mac product called HP Easy Scan. Not available for Windows. But, guess what it can do? It can scan a document and save as....

SEARCHABLE PDF!!!!!

Please try this scan solution:

HP Scan Extended

For Windows:   ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

>>> How could the engineers at HP miss this requirement?

No, they won't miss anything.  Many more expensive printers have this option such as the HP Officejet class printers.

The HP Envy 5400 simply does NOT have OCR software included therfore you CAN'T scan to searchable PDF. You have to PAY for this software.

Please try

and many more.

This response misses the following points:

1) The multi function printer I had for 10 years  (C7180) , has a Scan to SEARCHABLE PDF capability. NO ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE PURCHASE REQUIRED

2) Scanning to PDF without the ability to search is a completely useless feature. Offering a product that does this, such that it advertises it can scan to PDF is misleading, because nobody can use a PDF in which its content can't be searched.

Stating that I have to pay for software that I'm expecting a product to do is an excuse, not a solution.

@vdavi

As I said before, many printers have this software INCLUDED but not the Envy class printers. You simply bought a wrong printer for your need.

This response misses the following points I have raised

1) My 10 year old HP multifunction printer (C7180) offered a Scan as Searchable PDF WITHOUT THE NEED TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL SOFRWARE

2) Advertising a product that can Scan to PDF that isn't searchable is misleading. There is no point to save a document as PDF that ISN'T SEARCHABLE. It's basically an image.

Stating that I have to purchase additional software isn't a soluttion, it's an excuse.

And I will solve this problem by purchasing an EPSON. You are the reason HP sucks.

Hi,

I can't find this ? Where is it ?

Images and PDF files are TWO different things but I don't want to spend my time to talk about that.
