I have an HP 9135e, which has two trays.  I want one tray to have plain paper and the other to have cardstock.  Is there a way to select from my HP Envy computer [using Windows 10 (64-bit)] which tray I want to print from?  If I have to print something on plain paper, then need to print something on cardstock, I don't want to have to keep getting up to change the paper or to manually select which tray is the default and then remember to change the paper or default tray back after each printing job.   Thank you.

Welcome back to the HP Community --

First thing --

The printer does not support Card Stock as it might be defined outside of the strict confines of the support media (paper) types for the printer.

The printer supports the ISO standard paper type "Index", sometimes called "Card" or "HP Card" by HP.

-- Notes --

  • The Index / card type paper weight maximum  is 200 gsm / 110lb .
  • The printer supports Brochure (matte and glossy) / Professional paper (matte) at 180 gsm.

and

  • Index / card paper might be supported at more than one size.
  • Brochure / Professional paper is typically supported at standard size -- Letter / A4

Next,

Withing the supported paper sizes and type, each tray can be assigned its own paper size / type.

The printer can assign the default Tray and Paper settings for paper size / type.

====================

-- Load Paper --

Load paper according to the instructions in the user guide.

Next,

-- EWS -- Tray and Paper

Alternate EWS format - Select newer InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Job Configuration

What you can do here depends on whether you have installed the full driver printer software.

-- Side Bar --

HP Smart / HP App -- to date -- does not, by itself, support (understand) the concept of Scale or Default settings.

HP Smart - Windows -- can be used with the HP Smart Printing / HP Smart Universal Printing drivers to support Presets / Custom Shortcuts, including Tray selection, and possibly a default tray setup for particular jobs.

----------------

Job Setup - Preferences -

Printing Preferences

Printing Preferences help with job configuration by supporting standard templates and the creation of Custom Shortcuts.

The full range of Printing Preferences are accessible when (after) the full driver printer software is installed.

Example - Printing Preferences (for the 9135e printer) - standard format

Example - Printing Preferences - General Everyday Printing Template > Create Custom Shortcut

Sample >> Tab Paper Quality > Paper Source = Tray 2

               -- What else? --

-- The following is provided FYI --

The full driver printer software for this printer (also) supports an augmented driver selection --

HP Smart Printing

Might be included with (previous version of) the installation of the full driver printer software

or

Printer and OS version Dependent

HP Smart Universal Printing

Might be included with (current version of) the installation of the full driver printer software

OR

Software and drivers for HP Smart Universal Print Driver Series for Windows

Both of these special drivers support Presets / Custom Shortcuts.

Both drivers support the assignment of selected Printing Preferences that are used to define settings and defaults for job types.

You can use one of the augmented drivers to set up a print job.

For example, First assign the Printing Preferences for the HP Smart Universal Printing driver

Later, when you use the HP Smart Universal Printing driver with your job setup, the job configuration can use (access) those preferences to help you structure your current job.

Example - Driver HP Smart Universal Printing - (Assigned) Printing Preferences

HP_Smart_Universal_Printing_Printing_Preferences_3HP_Smart_Universal_Printing_Printing_Preferences_3

Controlling the Tray assignment during job configuration depends on the job type, the content (type), and paper size / type.  If you are using one of the augmented drivers, the Tray assignment is part of section "Document".

If your job setup includes any form of Source = "Automatic" and the "auto" setting does not work, then during the current job setup, select the Tray and do not depend on "automatic" tray selection.

-- Reminder --

HP Smart Printing and HP Smart Universal Printing prevent setup conflicts by only allowing supported combinations of settings.
