How do I change my hp6155E settings to black and white only,

Will this printer work if I remove the color ink cartridge?

Yes - "Single cartridge mode" is supposed to be a thing on two cartridge printers -- the user manuals generally indicate it's possible on those printers that support the feature.

Good to know it is just the document that is wrong this time.

I do not know of an all inclusive software setting to force black only printing.

Means little -- there are things I don't know.  Smiling.

Some printers support a preferred "default" print option for color --

I don't believe such is available on your older model - you could certainly check.

Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) and peruse the settings.

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Classic Format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

OR

HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Reminder

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

Welcome to the HP Community --

User Guide – HP Envy 6100e Series – HP Envy 6500e Series

Pages 29-30

"Some color ink is used even when printing with black cartridge only"

The user manual does not include wording that indicates the printer can run in single cartridge mode.

I interpret this to mean:

Both cartridges are necessary and both cartridges must be functional (in working order).

Settings to control how ink is used vary by the application or software you are using.

Sample Setup

HP Smart does not -- by itself -- understand the concept of creating Presets / Custom Shortcuts.

You can, however, adjust each job to the colors available within the application.

HP Smart does understand how to select previously created Shortcuts as found at the top of the More Settings menu.

For example,

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

Select your printer

Select Printing Preferences

Create a Custom Shortcut in Printing Preferences  and name it "Letter - Duplex - Black"

Starting Template / Shortcut = General Everyday Printing

Change Print in Grayscale to "Monochrome"

NOTE:  Color Choices / Options might vary according to the printer model.

Change Print on Both Sides to "Yes, flip over"

Save As (new shortcut) and name the new custom shortcut Letter - Duplex - Black

You may, if you wish, leave the new "Letter - Duplex - Black" custom Shortcut "selected" when you close Printing Preferences.  The choice of shortcut will "stick" until changed by you or by another app / program.

Example - Printing Preferences - New Custom Shortcut  - Letter - Duplex - Black

Printing_Preferences_Custom_Shortcut_Letter_Duplex_Black_1Printing_Preferences_Custom_Shortcut_Letter_Duplex_Black_1

- Optional -

Set the new custom "Letter - Duplex - Black" Shortcut as the "default for all jobs" in Printer Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults

Setting a Shortcut as the Printing Defaults choice is "mostly effective".

You should always check the settings for each job to ensure what you are getting is what you want and expect.

Example - Printer Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults

Printer_Properties_Reprint_9Printer_Properties_Reprint_9

General Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple PDF Print - Menu

More Settings > Print in Grayscale

OR

NOTE >> If you created a Custom Shortcut, you can select it along the ribbon.

Thanks for the in depth reply.  Some print jobs are launched by an application that I can't control.  We print crossword puzzles from the newspaper, which we read on line.  The print ends up being brown.  It will not print the puzzles if the color ink cartridge is exhausted.  My  use of the printer only requires black and white so I do not need the color cartridge.  This morning I removed the color cartridge from the printer.  The printer then asked me if I wanted to use the singe cartridge mode which I said yes.  Now it all works just the way I wanted it to.  There should be a software setting for this.

Thanks,

Ed
