I am gifting my envy 5200.to a friend without the ink plan.  I'm going to set it up for her.  What do I need to know?  Can she use the cartridges I have already in there or must I purchase them from outside?  I'm not tech savvy and want to give this to my best friend. Thank you

Welcome to the HP Community --

First - I don't find an Envy 5200 printer model.

Perhaps your printer is one of those found in the Search Results

HP Industrial Printers

NEXT --

If you are subscribed to Instant Ink, then you should cancel the subscription before losing control of the physical printer.  That is, cancel the subscription before giving the printer to your friend.

Instant Ink cartridges cannot be used outside of an active subscription to the service.

Locked cartridges are not a good reason to force your friend to subscribe -- even were she interested in doing so, the existing Instant Ink cartridges are tied to your account and to your printer's current location.

General Steps

  1. Cancel the subscription -
  2. Remove all the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.
  3. Purchase a new set of HP ink cartridges to be used with the printer in its new home.

-------------------------------

PLUS...

-- Reminder --

The printer cannot connect to your friend's wireless network unless it is first removed from your network.

Remove the printer from your network after other work is done -- for example, cancelling an Instant Ink subscription.

Restore Network Defaults / Install / Connect – Inkjet and Laser printers

-------------------------------

Were it mine to do,

  • Read the information (later in this message) about how to cancel

AND / OR

  • Contact Instant Ink Support in your area when the support office is open --
  • When you talk to Instant Ink Support, ask for specific help on what to do and when (for example, how to cancel and whether / when to install a new, purchased set of Ink).
  • If you don't have one on hand, ask how to receive a return bag for your Instant Ink cartridges.

======================

What is Instant Ink?

HP Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription service for which you are charged a monthly fee for a set number of printed pages.  (Each side of the paper is counted as a separate Page.)

While there is no additional charge for the ink, the subscription is not free and does charge each month.

IMPORTANT -- Ink is supplied only with an active subscription -

After the service is terminated by you or HP, all subscription ink cartridges stop working and must (should) be returned to HP.

Selecting the right number of pages for your plan is important.

======================

What is "Free Ink"?

There is no extra cost for ink.

Ink is provided as part of your subscription - use a drop or use a cup full, ink is included at no extra cost.

Important

  • All ink activated by the plan and all ink sent to you works as along as the trail / subscription service is active.

and

  • After the initial Ink Kit is mailed out, ink is sent (only) when the printer notifies the service that ink is depleted and a shipment is needed.

and

  • Subscription / Instant Ink cartridges remain the property of HP and should be returned to HP at close (termination) of the service contract.
