I set up my printer with the ink it gave me and it keeps telling me to use set up ink.

Hi @Jenn1113-1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This message means your printer is still in setup mode and requires the special “Setup” cartridges that came in the box. These cartridges have a unique chip that allows the printer to initialize for the first time. Regular HP 64 cartridges won’t work until the printer completes its initial setup.

Why This Happens

  • HP printers enrolled in Instant Ink or using HP+ require the original Setup cartridges for activation.
  • If you accidentally installed standard cartridges before completing setup, the printer will keep asking for “Setup Ink.”

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the Setup Cartridges
    • They are labelled “Setup” on the box and cartridge.
    • Install both black and color setup cartridges.

  2. Complete Printer Setup
  3. After Setup
    • Once setup is complete, you can replace the setup cartridges with regular HP 64 cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
