I have my HP Officejet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer set up and dedicated to a Windows 10 desktop computer and it has been for several years. I have recently purchased another computer that has a Windows 11 Operation System. I want to set up "sharing" of my printer with both computers. The Windows 10 computer is my primary computer, and the Windows 11 computer is in another location in my home for accessional use. The computers are both "hard wired" to my modem in the network and NOT using Wi-Fi to communicate with the printer. What is the process to set up "sharing" of the printer, with the Windows 10 computer being the primary, and the Windows 11 computer being the secondary computer?

Hi @Highlander1862

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are facing issues with the sharing the HP Printer with 2 window computers. Here’s how you can set up printer sharing between your Windows 10 desktop (primary) and your Windows 11 computer (secondary) when both are wired to the same modem/router:

On the Windows 10 (Primary) Computer

  • Open Control Panel → go to Devices and Printers.
  • Right‑click your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 → select Printer Properties.
  • Go to the Sharing tab.
  • Check Share this printer.
  • Give it a simple share name.
  • Click Apply and OK.

On the Windows 11 (Secondary) Computer

  • Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add device → Add manually.
  • Choose Select a shared printer by name.
  • Enter the path in this format:
  • Code
  • \\ComputerName\PrinterShareName
  • Example: \\DesktopPC\HP6978 (You can find your ComputerName in System → About on the Windows 10 PC.)
  • Click Next → Windows will install the drivers automatically.
  • Once added, test by printing a document.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
