I am setting up a Smart Tank 5000. The ink cartridges are full on arrival. The only icons blink and the Printhead will not move to center.

i have closed the cover and waited 15 seconds. I have also turned off the printer and waited 2 minutes.

Hi @Liz383,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially when you’re excited to set up your new Smart Tank 5000 and the printhead won’t move to the center. This usually happens during initial setup if the printer is stuck in an error state or hasn’t completed its startup sequence.

Why This Happens

  • The printer may still be in initialization mode.
  • The ink system setup wasn’t completed (even if the cartridges look full).
  • A cover sensor or latch might not be detected as closed.
  • Firmware or hardware lock preventing carriage movement.

Steps to Fix It

1. Check the Cover and Latches

  • Make sure the top cover is fully closed and the printhead access door clicks into place.
  • If the cover sensor isn’t engaged, the carriage won’t move.

2. Complete Ink System Setup

  • Smart Tank printers require you to fill the ink tanks and prime the system before the printhead unlocks.
  • On the control panel, check for any prompts like “Fill Ink” or “Prime System.”

3. Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Wait for the printer to finish its startup cycle (can take up to 2–3 minutes).

4. Firmware Update

  • If the printer powers on but stays stuck, update firmware via the HP app or the Embedded Web Server.

5. Check for Error Icons

  • If icons are blinking, note which ones (e.g., ink, paper, attention).
  • This can indicate what’s blocking the setup.
