@Spacman, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If you're experiencing issues setting up your HP OfficeJet 6958 printer on a MacBook Air running macOS 12.7.6, you can follow these general troubleshooting steps:

Check Printer Compatibility:

  • Ensure your HP OfficeJet 6958 printer is compatible with macOS 12.7.6. HP provides drivers and software for Mac, so compatibility is generally supported.

Download and Install Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers and software for your printer model, specifically designed for macOS.
  • Install the downloaded software by following the on-screen instructions.

Verify Connection:

  • Ensure the printer is properly connected to the same network as your Mac.
  • If using USB, verify that the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the Mac.

Add the Printer Manually:

  • Open System Preferences on your Mac and select Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the “+” button to add a printer.
  • Your HP OfficeJet printer should appear in the list. Select it and confirm the add process.

Check for Software Updates:

  • Make sure your macOS is up to date by checking for updates in the System Preferences.
  • Similarly, ensure that your HP printer drivers are up to date.

Reset Printing System:

  • If your printer does not add successfully, try resetting the printing system. In Printers & Scanners, right-click (or control-click) on the printer list and select Reset printing system. This will remove all printers and pending print jobs and allow you to start fresh.

Check Network Settings:

  • If the printer is networked, ensure it’s connected to the Wi-Fi and getting a valid IP address. You can check the network status on the printer's display if available.

Confirm Bonjour/AirPrint Compatibility:

  • Verify that your printer supports AirPrint and Bonjour is enabled. This simplifies connection and setup on macOS.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
