I am getting error code 0x80040003 "unexpected configuration problem" when I try to print from my computer. This started after the latest update from Microsoft a few days ago.

Hi @Marilyn9874,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is no longer printing from your computer after a recent Microsoft update, and you’re seeing error code 0x80040003 with an “unexpected configuration problem.” Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Restart the Print Spooler service
Open Services on the computer and restart the “Print Spooler” service.
This clears stuck or corrupted print jobs caused by recent updates.

Power reset the printer
Turn the printer on and unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
Wait 60 seconds, reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet, and turn the printer back on.

Remove and re-add the printer
Go to Devices and Printers and remove the affected printer.
Restart the computer, then add the printer again using HP Smart.

Reinstall the printer driver
Download and install the full-feature driver or HP Smart from HP’s website.
This replaces any driver files that may have been altered by the Windows update.

Set the printer as default
In Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and select “Set as default.”
This prevents Windows from sending jobs to an incorrect or virtual printer.

Check Windows Print Preferences
Right-click the printer, open Printing Preferences, and select any standard paper size.
Apply the settings to reset any corrupted configuration values.

Roll back or repair the recent Windows update (if needed)
Open Windows Update > Update history and check the most recent update.
If the issue started immediately after the update, uninstalling or repairing it can restore printing.

Run the built-in printer troubleshooter
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
Run the Printer troubleshooter to automatically fix configuration-related errors.

I hope this helps.
