Using my kids printer. I load 5x8 in the manual feed. Setup Word for 5x8, etc. All looks good but the printer prints as if on 8.5 x 11 and the left side of the document is missing and only part of the right prints on the left side of the paper.

What setting am I missing? I tried to clear anything that mentioned "scale". I am sure it can do this. But I can't 🙂

Thanks.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

Most of the time when I answer anything having to do with a Laser printer, I am perhaps "part right".

Here goes - take with "a grain of salt".

Word settings aside, the printer must be aware of the paper size and type - and must support the size and type in the tray you are using.

Reference - Your user manual:

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148-M149 - User Guide

The main tray of the printer supports A5 - 5x8.3"  for single sided print jobs.

Starting on Page 21

5x8 might be available as a Custom Paper Size

 Create Custom Paper Sizes

Which tray supports custom paper sizes?

I have no idea - Tray 1 / Main tray?

NOTE - What about the printer software?

In my experience (with InkJet printers), you need to have installed the Full Solution / Full Feature Software to be able to create and manage a Custom Paper Size.

In my opinion, you want this software installed even if you are not creating a custom paper size.

The Full Solution Software is not the same thing as a universal driver and it is not the same thing as built-in Windows print drivers.

OK.

Assuming you can manage to get the printer software to accept the paper size,

The printer must be aware of the paper size & type.

If you don't know how to get the printer display panel to let you edit the paper size / type,

try using the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Looks like - checking Page 110 of the user manual - that paper settings are in tab / section System

Open EWS

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

If the paper size list does not include your paper size, look for "Custom" (likely the last entry in the list) and use that.

Hopefully, something here will have helped or at the least, not made it worse.

Thanks.

That's incredibly complex for a printer I am only using while visiting family. The printer, and Word, know the paper size. I am placing it in the manual tray above the standard paper tray. The printer prints as if the paper is 8.5 x 11 so only the center section of the documents prints on the 5 x 8 paper.

I suspect some sort of scaling issue. Was hoping someone would come along and say "check this box" or"uncheck this box". Would be surprised it woyudl be more than that. And I do not want to change a default, just for this one job.

Thanks.

So let me update. The driver KNOWS 5x8 as does the printer.

I select print. The printer itself says "load 5 x 8 in the manual slot". It is already there. Nothing i can find to tell it that. I can remove, reinsert paper - no change.

The only option then is use current media. the current media IS 5x8 but the printer then thinks its 8.5 x 11.

Does that help you help me?

Can anyone help?

Got it working. Unsure how. Something with paper sizes and/or fit to page or zoom settings. But works now as expected.
