HP Smart Tank 5105 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I've totally failed to set up a Smart Tank 5105 printer by using the HP Smart app running on a Windows 11 laptop.  Despite 7 hours of messing about, and also runnning the troubleshooting program, I still cannot print anything from the laptop (although I am able to get prints of the printer status etc by using the control panel buttons). I eventually did a factory reset so that I could restart the whole install from a clean starting point, but the printer still displays a steady blue wifi button, so the reset was presumably incomplete.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi @Not_a_Chance,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re having trouble setting up your HP Smart Tank 5105 on a Windows 11 laptop — even after a factory reset and several hours of troubleshooting, you still can’t print from the laptop. Let’s go step by step to get your printer properly connected and working.

1. Confirm Printer Reset

With the printer ON, press and hold the Wi-Fi button and the Cancel (X) button together for 5 seconds.

Wait for the Wi-Fi light to blink purple or amber (not steady blue).

This ensures the printer is fully restored to setup mode and ready for a new connection.

2. Prepare Your Network

Make sure your laptop is connected to the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network you plan to connect the printer to.

Keep the printer within 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) of the router during setup.

Temporarily disable any VPNs, firewalls, or antivirus software that may block the setup process.

3. Install HP Smart Freshly

Uninstall the HP Smart app from your laptop.

Download the latest version of HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.

Restart your laptop after the installation.

4. Start Fresh Setup

Open HP Smart → select Add Printer.

Wait for the printer to appear as “HP Smart Tank 5105 – Setup”.

If it doesn’t appear, click Set Up a New Printer.

Follow the on-screen steps to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

When prompted, enter your Wi-Fi password.

A blinking purple/amber Wi-Fi light indicates the printer is in setup mode. A steady blue light appears only after a successful connection.

5. Verify Printer Connection

Once setup completes, the Wi-Fi light should stay steady blue.

Print a Network Configuration Page from the control panel:

Press and hold the Information (i) button until the page prints.

Ensure the printer shows Connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.

6. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download HP Print and Scan Doctor on your laptop.

Open it and select your printer.

Allow it to scan for connectivity and driver issues and apply any recommended fixes.

I hope this helps.
