**** and Outlook have stopped allowing Lass Secure apps. Are there going to be firmware updates to my Brand new Smart Tank 7600 printer so I can utilize the scan to email function? This is very disappointing for a printer available in 2025/2026. Both of these very popular email services require OAuth2 instead of simply the smtp- setting.

Hi @Riverraider,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I feel your disappointment. When a brand‑new printer can’t “just work” with modern email security, it’s frustrating. You’re absolutely right: Outlook/Microsoft 365 and Gmail are pushing hard toward OAuth 2.0 and away from legacy “username + password over SMTP,” which breaks scan‑to‑email on many home/office printers.

What changed with Outlook/Microsoft 365 and Gmail

  • Exchange Online (Microsoft 365/Outlook): Microsoft disabled Basic Authentication across most protocols in late 2022 and is phasing out Basic Auth for SMTP AUTH (client submission) as well-extended to begin March 1, 2026, with full deactivation by April 30, 2026. Tenants that never used SMTP Basic may already have it disabled. In short: Modern auth (OAuth2) is the future, and basic auth continues to be restricted or off in many orgs.
  • Google/Gmail: Google removed “Less Secure Apps” years ago and has set a firm cutoff that forces OAuth for third‑party access. Google Workspace timelines moved through 2024–2025, with legacy password‑only access being turned off, requiring OAuth or (in limited cases) App Passwords.

Does the HP Smart Tank 7600 series support OAuth2 in firmware?

  • HP’s current OAuth2 scan‑to‑email support is documented for HP Enterprise / Managed devices running FutureSmart 5.7+ (typically LaserJet Enterprise MFPs). Those products can authenticate to Microsoft 365 with OAuth2 directly from the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • For consumer/prosumer models (Smart Tank, OfficeJet, DeskJet, many LaserJet Pro), HP support articles indicate OAuth2 is not available in firmware as of late 2025, and providers that require OAuth2 (e.g., free Outlook.com / Hotmail accounts) will block scan‑to‑email from the device.

Bottom line: As of today, the Smart Tank 7600 series does not have an HP‑published firmware path to enable native OAuth2 scan‑to‑email from the control panel. (If HP adds it in the future, it will appear in the printer’s release notes and on the support page, but there’s no public commitment or timeline right now.)

Quick next steps (so you can get scanning today)

  1. Install/Use HP Smart on your PC/Mac/phone and send scans via email from the app. It’s fast and avoids SMTP hurdles.
  2. If you’re in a Microsoft 365 org and need device‑initiated email:
    • Ask IT to configure Direct Send (no auth) for internal recipients in Exchange Online.
  3. If you’re using Gmail personally:
    • Try App Passwords (with 2‑Step Verification) if your account still permits it; otherwise, use HP Smart or a relay.
  4. If you must have native OAuth on‑device:
    • Evaluate an HP FutureSmart 5.7+ MFP for panel‑based OAuth2 with Microsoft 365.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
