HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Ubuntu LTS

I want to print C5 envelopes on my HP Smart Tank 7005.  The specification says it should support it.

I use Ubuntu as OS an write from LibreOffice (or pdf).

Every time I try to print I get error code E1/E2 (wrong paper format).

I had to make a custom C5 format in Ubuntu (I couldn't find any).

I've logged in to the Embedded Web Server of the printer but it has no knowledge of any C5 format (and it has no custom format either).

Really annoying.

Any suggestions?

Hello @Kjellge ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

While the HP Smart Tank 7005 hardware supports C5 envelopes, the printer’s firmware and Linux (HPLIP/CUPS) driver do not expose C5 as a selectable envelope size, and the printer performs a strict paper-size match check between:

What CUPS sends

What the printer firmware expects

Because the printer firmware does not recognize C5 (and does not allow true custom sizes in the EWS), it rejects the job and throws E1/E2 (wrong paper format) even though the envelope is physically loaded.

Workarounds that may help

You can try one of the following, though results vary:

Load envelopes as A5 or A4 (scaled)

In LibreOffice/PDF:

Set paper size to A5 or A4

Scale content to fit C5

Some users report this bypasses the firmware check

Use “Any Size / Borderless” if available

Only works if the driver exposes it (often it doesn’t on Linux)

Print via another OS

Windows or macOS drivers do support C5 for this printer

If possible, print from another system or VM

Although the spec sheet lists C5 support, C5 envelope printing is not fully supported on Ubuntu/Linux for the Smart Tank 7005 due to firmware + driver limitations. The E1/E2 error is expected behavior in this configuration.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with the printer.
