My printer stopped printing in color with my Dell Inspiron laptop. It continues to print in color with an IPad. I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software. The IPad works fine. The laptop is now presented only with printing to Fax as an option for printing.  Each time I try to resolve this I am told a driver is missing. A "new" driver is downloaded and installed in response to this - same outcome - I am only offered the option to print to Fax. Any ideas? I've gone through the whole process about 6 times!!

Try again, this time removing not only the printer software in Programs and Features, also check and remove the printer devices hiding in other places (the Device Manager, for example).

My HP ENVY 4500 printer driver is not available

Paraphrased solution
• Open the Control Panel > Programs and Features, Uninstall the printer, After the uninstall completes, Restart
• Start the installation
If the printer balks at the network step during installation of the printer software,
• Cancel the installation – leave install window open
• Open the Device Manager and delete / remove the printer and any “unknown device” from relevant categories, leave the Device Manager open
• Retry the installation

Details solution
Try following these steps and check if that may make any difference:

1. Open the Control Panel > Programs and Features, Uninstall the printer software.
    a) After the software is uninstalled, Restart the computer and log in.
2. Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Remove /Delete instances of the printer
3. While the software tries to install > Right-Click the Start Menu (Windows) icon > select Device Manager
    a) Expand category 'Printers'
    b) Delete any listed instance(s) of your printer model or Unknown Device: Right-Click and select Uninstall
    c) Expand category ‘Imaging Devices’
    d) Delete any listed instance(s) of your printer model or Unknown Device: Right-Click and select Uninstall
    e) Leave the Device Manager open

4. Open the printer software and select Connect a New Printer
    a) For Wired Connection: Select Wired Network, select printer, click Next
    b) For Wireless Connection: Select Wireless, select printer, click Next

5. On the Printer installation screen:
    a) Click Cancel to stop the installation
    b) Allow 20-30 seconds to cancel the installation and return to the “connection type” screen.
    c) Repeat the steps again to select your printer and complete the network installation

6. If the installation hangs
    a) Repeat at Step 3, this time expanding and removing the printer from Device Manager > WSD Print Provider
    b) Continue the installation
