HP LaserJet 1020

I work as a technician in my day job, so I decided to tackle this problem for my Dad's new computer. When he plugs in his old HP LaserJet 1020, nothing happens and it does not appear as an available printer.  I found a couple of people with this exact same problem on this forum, but I was not able to add my discoveries to those threads, so I will just type it here.

What gave me a clue was that Device Manager was detecting it, however it was not in the Printers category. It was sorted under "Universal Serial Bus controllers."  As I was unsuccessfully right-clicking and manually installing INF files from the Full Solution installer package, I decided to snoop around the properties of HP102064.CAT and noticed there was a tab for Digital Signatures.

Because I follow tech news, I know about expired certificates breaking websites and stuff. I wondered if the printer certificates were too old and not being installed.  I clicked Details, View Certificate, and Install Certificate.  After that, the printer installed successfully for me.  I hope this helps someone else.
