I have tried wishing the settings on the printer and on HP Utility software to cause the printer to use Tray #2 by default. How do I prevent the Printer from looking for paper in Tray 1 and use Tray 2 by default without delay.

Two possibilities here:

1. If you have tray 1 set for any size any type this device will default to Tray 1. Set a paper size for it and it should return to normal expected behaviour of defaulting to tray 2

2. Ensure that the paper size settings and type settings for the print job match the media you have loaded.

Settings on driver will vary depending on which driver you have installed. Also if you happen to install a MicroSoft IPP driver your printer will not function as expected.
