HP Envy 5640
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Suddenly stopped being able to print 2 days ago. Can't print from any Office application or a PDF. As soon as I send an item to print get the spinning wheel - no print box pops up. Have to re-boot to get rid of the spinning wheel. Can't access 'print and scan' in system preferences (just get spinning wheel again). Have checked all Mac updates are up-to-date. Just installed an update for the HP Envy 5640 but it hasn't rectified the problem. I can print to the same printer from a different laptop. I can send a test page to print from HP Utility accessed in Applications folder from the problematic desktop Mac. Haven't downloaded anything recently that could have caused this problem... really stuck! Hoping someone else knows how to resolve this problem.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Updating the software on MAC and using AirPrint drivers may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:

Click here to Update software on Mac(try again)

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

6.) Try to print.

Let me know how this goes.

Hi Kumar0307,

Thank you for taking the time to offer advice. Unfortunately I still got the spinning wheel problem when I tried to access print and scan through system preferences. However - the good news is my problem seems to have resolved itself. I have had a separate issue with my external backup drive not working so I have been rebooting quite a lot over the last 2 days as I've tried different fixes. I also cleared out a lot of files - although that shouldn't have affected the printer. Anyway - I can now print - just my back up drive to sort out now!

Thanks again,

Natalie
