HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w Printer

After I attempted to update firmware (because of scan problems) with the HP Universal Scan - basic feature Software and Driver- (which is available as firmware for the HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M28w) the printer is now stuck in error mode! Its power light continues to blink with HP flashing in led display due to this corrupted (?) driver. The general instructions to get the printer out of error mode do not work.

As a result I can't  complete set-up of reinstallation of all firmware because the PC/ printer can NOT find the USB connection and therefore i can not complete setup I do not have wireless on my PC so it needs to be USB!

Meanwhile I've  managed to add the printer driver partially to the PC but 'devices and printers' menu now show both this printer and an unspecified HP laserjet 3020 printer.  This unspecified printer showed up on PC after installment of universal driver when the printer got stuck in error mode and when i plug in the USB connection to printer en PC.

The USB connection for completing reinstallment of firmware is not found because the printer now seems to be assigned & recognized as this unspecified printer (also). [the USB port IS working:  it makes a sound when i [re]-connect the USB cable]   When i try to use 'advance setting' under the 'tools' tab in the HP printer assistant to reset the printer in this manner i get an error message: "parameter is incorrect"

In addition: When i try to use the HP print and scan Doctor,  it also finds a 'USB printing support' as a product on my PC, but as a not-installed product. When i prompt the next button, i get the message that "full software solution is not installed on your computer' and to click the 'get installer" button. However when i do so, i get an "404 HP (error)  can't be reached webpage".... so frustrating 😞

General support via HP whatsapp and phone  just came up with general solutions that do not work.  Windows trouble shooter for printers is not resolving this problem either.

Found a post with similar issue of flashing power light and HP textcode in LED display, apparently the printer is in error mode and needs to be repaired or replaced ?  That is really rather unacceptable because the printer is no longer under warrenty AND this problem is the result of a corrupted HP Universal driver which is available  as firmware for this printer.  Also just replaced the inkt cartridge with the official (expensive) HP cartridge so more money spent. NOT very pleased with HP right now 😡

PLEASE HP support could you kindly give me the instructions for a needed (?) NVRAM reset of this printer

Or whatever particular (not general) instructions will correct this problem

Hi @muali,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an orange light, and stopped printing issue with your HP 310 INKJET PRINTER. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove the USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you Gaya1239 for your reply.

Unfortunately the powerdrain did not work as a reset for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w  [It is not a HP 310 inkjet printer nor a stopped-printing issue] Nor did the provided links give a solution or answer to the problem as described elaborately above.

The printer remains in corrupted error mode because of the  HP Universal Scan - basic feature Software and Driver 51.8.5837 - which is available as a firmware update for the HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M28w on HP support website.

Meanwhile I've tried every solution I could find on HP community and elsewhere to completely remove and reinstall the firmware, spent hours on this but to no avail! [because I cannot complete set-up as described above]  I need a very specific answer to resolve this problem.  General solutions do not work unfortunately!

Hi Muali,

I also think that the current drivers are corrupt. I tried to install the printer on two independent new PCs with Windows 11. I tried to install both drivers, I wanted to use the universal driver because I need the OCR function.

I think the OCR function was removed from the normal driver because of licensing issues - HP support, can you confirm this?

While the printer function sometimes worked, the scanner function was completely dysfunctional. Initially, I could scan one page but no second or third page with the universal driver. Later, I could not scan any pages. I could hear the scanner doing scanning, but the page nevers shows up in the program, it just stays white. The same happend if I subsequently installed the normal driver.

Interestingly, the scanner function works if I use the "HP Smart" app. It took me a while to convince myself to try the "HP Smart" app. The reason for this was that HP updated the program so that you can only use it if you have registered and logged in with an HP account. And I do not think that it is fair from HP to force use to register online before you can actually use the printer you purchased. HP, could you please explain why it is necessary to register a HP account to use the HP Smart app?

For me the consequences are:

1. I can only scan with the HP Smart app.

2. OCR is not working anymore - THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT FUNCTION for me.

Frustrating

@serrghsbhdr Your scanning issues sound familiar. However I do not know if this is a result of a (removed) OCR function.   I didn’t use the HP smart app and just assumed to resolve the scan issue with the recent universal scan driver provided for this printer on HP product support page. As a result the printer is now stuck in error mode and I cannot scan or print anything. May I suggest you write your own post on HP community about your particular issues and questions to see if anyone can come up with a satisfying answer.I have not yet received such an answer. Best regards
