True, the printer cannot print onto actual ceramic tile.
What else?
Are you perhaps asking about "tile prints", that is, a method to print an image larger than original over several pieces of paper?
In general, your printer might be able to create "Tile Prints".
There are some limitations and the methods vary depending on the tools, your skill set, and the desired outcome.
One of the many excellent articles on the subject of Tile Print:
How to Make Your Own Posters Using Tiled Printing
"Basic Tools" - Tile / Poster Prints
The basic idea of printing in "poster" style can be accomplished with Adobe Reader DC
Using an Image for your Poster / Tile Print?
Set the image into a document > save, Export the document to PDF

Adobe Reader DC – Install Whether You Use It or Not
If you have not done so,
Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional Foxit Reader)
HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
NOTE: Adobe Reader DC software can be installed even if you do not normally open / view / print PDF files directly from the Adobe Reader DC software.

Thanks for the replies but I'm afraid I didn't explain accurately my problem. I would like to know if you can print many small images on a sheet of A4, eg visiting cards. I thought that was termed tile printing but seem to have got that wrong. I was able to do so on an inexpensive Epson some years ago but can't find a way of doing it on my HP Envy.

Edits - Add Irfanview Example - Custom Contact Sheet Set
Using Irfanview, you can create the file you want with the images you select.
After the work is done to create the formatting and file structure, you can print the image file set on your printer.
Scroll down to section Irfanview > Custom Contact Sheet Set
Original Content
Ah, OK.
The printer is unaware of what it prints - it will print what you send, in other words.
Yes, you can print "small images on an A4 paper".
The software you use to create the job controls the option to place the images on the paper.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the case of HP Smart (Windows) , you can easily print more than one image on a paper.
Caveat: There is a limitation to the size of the images and the result is not a true "tile" (square) print array.
Photo sizes include those shown in the example that explains the "how-to" process.
