I am a Microsoft Certified Professional who purchased an HP Deskjet 4152 for a customer about a month ago. About a week ago, she called and said that her printer would not print. It appeared as though the printer had turned itself off, and would not respond to the power button at all. The only way I could get it back on was to unplug it and then back in again.

This issue seems to stem from a defective Auto-Off feature that turns the printer off after 2 hours, whereupon the user must press the power button to turn it back on. The power management section of the printer's settings does present an option for Auto-Off, but it cannot be disabled. It's noted "The Auto-Off setting is preset and cannot be configured."

I'm unable to update the firmware because it's evidently the most recent version. Is there any way to disable this feature? I've heard of the printer going to sleep, but not turning itself off completely. Awful, awful feature. And it's broken.

Hi,

Is the printer connected wirelessly?

The Auto-Off feature will be disabled and grayed out as expected whenever a printer is connected to a wireless network, this is expected behavior, see page 41 within its Manual.

If the printer is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, the printer might not be getting enough power to properly function. To resolve the issue, plug the printer into a wall outlet.
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer power cord from the power strip or surge suppressor.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge suppressor.
  4. Turn on the printer if it does not turn on by itself.
If the issue persists, also print and evaluate a Wireless Test Report and evaluate its results, any network-related warning may cause such behavior of a printer freeze in Slip Mode, may its Header contacting any warning?

Ok, but how do I turn it off? This isn't a feature I want on and nowhere on the packaging did it mention it would be disabled if I made the printer wireless.  I do not want to have to keep turning on the printer manually when most printers simply go to sleep when they're inactive and wake-up when a job is sent to them. It also doesn't help that the function is defective since the printer does not respond to the power button being pressed after the auto-off feature turns the printer off.
