Hi @Yerlin1

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that the printhead/carriage is not moving to the center position, which prevents access to the ink cartridges or printheads. This issue can occur due to a paper jam, obstruction inside the printer, incomplete initialization, or a carriage mechanism problem. Please follow the steps below:

Reset the Printer

  • Turn the printer on.
  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.
  • Check whether the carriage moves to the center during startup.

Check for Obstructions

  • Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.
  • Open the cartridge access door or front access area.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the carriage path.
  • Remove any jammed paper, packing material, labels, or foreign objects.
  • Ensure no torn pieces of paper are stuck inside the printer.

Verify Carriage Movement

  • With the printer unplugged, open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently check whether the carriage can move freely from side to side.
  • If it feels stuck, look again for any obstruction in the carriage path.
  • Do not force the carriage if significant resistance is felt.

Observe Any Error Indicators

Please note:

  • Any error messages displayed on the screen.
  • Which lights are blinking.
  • Whether you hear grinding, clicking, or buzzing noises during startup.

Also I would request you to please provide:

  • The exact HP printer model number?
  • Is this a new printer or one that was previously working?
  • Is the carriage stuck on the right side, left side, or center?
  • Do you see any error messages or flashing lights on the control panel?
  • Have you recently experienced a paper jam or replaced cartridges/printheads?

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
