Hi, I am trying to set a custom print size using the menu on my printer, but it just adds a star to the Custom Size setting, without allowing me to set the custom size. How do I set the custom size? I also, I am using a Mac and iPhone to print from.

Hi @SuperJax,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great question. This is a common point of confusion with HP printers. The star next to Custom Size in the printer menu usually means the option is selected, but HP printers generally don’t allow you to define custom dimensions directly from the printer’s control panel. Instead, custom sizes must be set from the print settings on your computer or mobile device.

Here’s how you can do it:

On Mac

  1. Open the document you want to print.
  2. Click File → Print.
  3. In the Print dialog, click Paper Size → Manage Custom Sizes.
  4. Click the + button to add a new size.
  5. Enter your desired width and height, then click OK.
  6. Select this custom size when printing.

On iPhone (via HP App or AirPrint)

  • Unfortunately, AirPrint does not support custom paper sizes. It uses standard sizes only.
  • If you need custom sizes, you’ll need to print from a Mac or PC using the steps above.

Why the Printer Menu Shows a Star

The printer’s menu only lets you select a predefined custom size (created via the driver/software), not create one. Once you define the size on your Mac, the printer will recognize it when you print.

I hope this helps.
