Hi @tjullman,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when you're trying to set up your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 on a new laptop and the HP Smart app doesn’t show your printer in the list. Let’s walk through a few steps to get things working again.

Steps to Add Your Printer to HP Smart on a New Laptop

1. Make Sure the Printer Is in Wi-Fi Setup Mode

If your printer was previously connected to another network, it may not be discoverable.

  • Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until the Wireless light starts blinking.
  • This puts the printer into Wi-Fi setup mode for 2 hours.

2. Connect Your Laptop to the Same Wi-Fi Network

  • Ensure your laptop is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer to use.
  • Open the HP Smart app and click “Add Printer”.

If the printer doesn’t appear, try restarting both the printer and the laptop.

3. Use HP Smart’s Manual IP Setup

If the printer is already on the network but not showing up:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel.
  • Note the IP address.
  • In HP Smart, click “Add Printer” > “Add manually using IP address”.

4. Install Full Software from the HP Website

If HP Smart still doesn’t detect the printer, install the full driver package:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
