Printer is an HP Officejet Pro 6830

Hello,

I got a printer recently and the way my campus's Wi-Fi works means we 2 networks. One is for Devices (printers, consoles, etc.) with a WPA2 security, and the other is for Laptops (and smartphones). My printer can connect to Devices network (we'll call it "Device") and My laptop can connect to the normal network (we'll call it "Secure"). This connection does not work the other way: when I connect to Device I get a limited connection and cannot find my printer through the setup software, even after inputting its IP as prompted, and my printer will not connect to Secure as you have to go through a specific setup and sign in process to connect to it.

My solution to this problem was to set up HPs Wireless Direct network - whereby your printer project sits own WiFi network and you can connect any device to it and print. Sounds super simple to do, but all the guides on how to do this on HPs website require you to have a direct wireless connection to the printer though the same network - not possible. I did find a guide online that showed how to set it up, but the guide is old and uses functions in Windows XP that I don;t know how to access on 8.1

I've tried setting it up through the USB cable but the setup program doesn't recognize it despite the fact that it's connected and will print through the cable.

The printer IS projecting the network as it should - I can see it in my connections list and can connect to it with limited connection (as it should be) - but printing requests I send to the printer are met with errors (it just says the printer is in an error state).

If anyone could help me set this up that would be great - I've already had enough trouble with it, I just wanna print things.

If you need anything else I'll add it to the post and reply to comments with it.

EDIT: Though of some more information that may be of pertinence:

  • When I look at "Local devices" in my list of printers, the printer shows up as a "Network" version in the list - but ONLY if I connected to the network that the device is projecting.

  • Connecting to Device or Secure removes it from the list.

Hi @Kevin232,

I'd like to help!

The printer cannot connect to Guest or public networks (such as networks found in apartments, coffee shops, schools, or hotels) as they have additional security features that can prevent connectivity and printing.

To print, directly connect your computer or mobile device to your printer with Wi-Fi Direct.

For more information, go to Wi-Fi Direct Printer Setup.

Or you may set up the printer using a USB cable, refer to HP printer setup (USB cable)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
