First time set up of new Office Jet Pro 8130e.  Using the control panel on the printer, it will not let me get past the "Firmware Updates" screens.  It freezes.  Cannot go forward or backward.  Cannot find a reset to start over.  Tried turning it off and on and also unpluging.  Nothing works.  using HP robot chats was useless.  Please help.  Do I need  to return for a new one?

Hi @Richard560,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can completely understand how frustrating this is. Setting up a brand-new printer should feel exciting, not like hitting a brick wall at the Firmware Update screen. You’ve already tried the right steps (power cycle, unplugging), so let’s go deeper and get your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e unstuck.

Why This Happens

The printer is likely stuck in Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) mode during a mandatory firmware update. This can occur due to:

  • Interrupted update process.
  • Network connectivity issues.
  • Firmware corruption during initial boot.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Force Restart and Reset

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in while holding the Cancel button (X) for 15 seconds.
  • This often forces the printer to bypass the frozen screen.

2. Try a Semi-Full Reset

(Advanced step – resets all settings)

  • Turn the printer OFF.
  • Hold # and 3 while turning it back ON.
  • Keep holding until the screen shows Resetting Printer.
  • If that fails, try # 6 for a full factory reset.

3. Update Firmware via USB

4. Check Network

  • If the printer is trying to update via Wi-Fi, ensure strong connectivity.
  • If possible, move closer to the router or use Ethernet.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
