How do I turn off the lights on the printer? I only see an option to dim them, and I need them off. I need to my room dark to accomodate someone with special needs who is disturbed by any light, but switching the printer off/on all the time is a big pain.

Hi @NeilRS,

I understand you want to turn off the lights on your HP Envy 6400 without having to power the printer off completely. Here’s what you can do:

1. Use the “Dim Lights” Setting

On the printer control panel, navigate to:
Settings (gear icon) > Printer Maintenance > Printer Settings > Dim Lights.

This is the closest official option HP provides to reduce brightness. Unfortunately, there is no built-in option to completely turn off the lights permanently.

2. Workarounds to Block the Lights

Since the printer doesn’t allow full shutdown of lights without powering off:

Physical Cover

Use a small piece of black electrical tape or a dark sticker over the power/status LED lights.

This won’t affect printer functionality but will block visible light.

Printer Placement

Position the printer so that lights are facing away from the room or out of direct view.

You can also place it inside a low-ventilation cabinet that allows airflow but blocks the light.

Night Mode / Sleep Mode

Set the printer to enter Sleep Mode quickly (via control panel settings).

While in Sleep Mode, most lights are dimmed further, and the printer uses minimal power.

Important: HP Envy 6400 series does not officially allow lights to be fully disabled while the printer is on. Any physical covering or repositioning is the safest method to prevent disturbing someone sensitive to light.I hope this helps.

That is unfortunate that it takes so much work. I have elected to just turn the printer off for now.
