Deskjet D4160
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This problem emerged out of nowhere, printer had been working fine. Suddenly it's not being seen by my computer, with this message from Windows: "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows 10 does not recognize it."  I've done just about everything people on the internet say to do, and all the advice they give points in the direction of my computer being at fault --- bad USB port, outdated drivers, wrong settings on USB properties, etc.

BUT there's a wrinkle: I went to install the printer on my wife's computer (which also has Windows 10) and as soon as I plugged it in I got the same message.

So... that leads me to believe that the printer really is defective. Mechanically it seems to be OK, so maybe it's a problem with the software that resides on the printer itself. If so, is there a way to fix that?

Thanks

Thank you for joining the HP Support Community

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Did you try with a different USB cable?

Try using a different USB and check if the issue persists, this could be an issue with the printer.

I would personally suggest you contact our HP Support for one on one interaction.

Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp

Step 3. Enter the product number or select to auto detect

Step 4. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 5. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number and phone number appear.

Aaaaargh, that was too easy!:-)

Seriously, thanks Raj. Turns out I forgot I had an extension cord on the cable and I must have tugged it enough to loosen the connection. Lesson learned. Thanks again.
