HI,

We tried to connect HP Printer (Inkjet and Laser Jet) using USB OTG cable to Samsung Android Device.

We enrolled the Samsung device to VMWare Workspace One MDM using a Work Profile and Personal Profile.

We installed the HP Print Service Plug in in both profile.

But when we go to Settings/Connections/More Connection settings/ Printing/HP Print Service, it shows the printer only in personal profile please see below

When we go to Work Profile it does not shows the printer as below

We tested this using HP Deskjet 1050 and LaserJet 476W, and both have the same behavior, we believe all HP printer that use HP Print Service plugin will have same issue.

Please advise if there is any workaround for this issue or HP don't allow connection thru MDM Work Profile, but only works in Personal Profile?

Thanks,

Mersiung

Hi,

Additional information, we have opened all the USB connection in the MDM Work Profile, so any USB connected device like storage and HID device (mouse/keyboard) will connect fine in the work profile.

We also tested to enroll this device to Samsung Knox Manage MDM using a Work Profile and Personal Profile, and it has the same behavior.

Other non-Samsung device that we tested is Huawei Mate 20 Pro with OS 12 enrolled to Workspace One and Samsung Knox Manage, it has the same behavior also.

Therefore we can conclude this is not a device issue and not an MDM issue also.

It seems that HP Print Service Plugin app have restrictions over this MDM workprofile. Could you please advise?

Thanks,

Mersiung

Hi @SamsungETS,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To connect an HP printer via USB to an Android device with a work profile, you can follow these general steps.

  • Check printer compatibility: Ensure that your HP printer supports USB connectivity with Android devices. You can refer to the printer's manual or specifications to confirm this.
  • Connect the printer: Connect your HP printer to your Android device using a compatible USB cable. Make sure the printer is powered on and in a ready state.
  • Enable Developer Options: To access USB-related settings, you may need to enable Developer Options on your Android device. To do this, go to Settings > About phone (or About device) > tap on the "Build number" several times until you see a message indicating that Developer Options are enabled.
  • Enable USB debugging: Once you have enabled Developer Options, go to Settings > Developer Options and enable USB debugging. This setting allows the Android device to communicate with the connected printer.
  • Set up the work profile: If you haven't already set up a work profile on your Android device, follow your organization's guidelines or consult your IT department to create a separate work profile.
  • Grant permissions: Within the work profile settings, ensure that the necessary permissions are granted to access USB devices and printers. This may vary depending on the Android version and device manufacturer. Look for options related to USB connections and printer permissions.
  • Configure printer settings: Open the printing settings on your Android device. Within the work profile, locate the printer settings and select your HP printer from the available list of connected devices. You may need to perform a search for available printers or manually add the printer if it doesn't appear automatically.
  • Test the connection: Once you have selected your HP printer, try printing a test page or any document from an application within the work profile. Ensure that the printer is responding correctly and printing as expected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

We have enabled the USB debugging.

Printer in Personal setting can be detected and works fine. But in Work Profile on the same device cannot be detected. So the issue is not in Device compatibility, since it is the same device.

Permission in Work Profile has been granted as below:

1. in VMWare Workspace one, USB transfer and USB host has been granted

SamsungETS_0-1684828988637.png

SamsungETS_1-1684829509539.png

2. in Samsung Knox Manage, USB Host has been granted also.

With all the above enabled the printer still cannot be detected in work profile

Thanks.
