I have the HP Office Jet 8139e, had for over a year and I always install genuine HP ink cartridges. I am getting the message "Use SETUP cartridges that came with your printer".  I tried everything suggested but my printer still doesn't work. What to do?

Hi @Lina92154,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

1. Perform a Hard Reset:

A hard reset can sometimes resolve hardware issues.

  • Step 1: Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Step 2: Disconnect all external devices (e.g., USB drives).
  • Step 3: Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Step 4: Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

2. Reinstall Cartridges:

Ensure the cartridges are installed correctly.

  • Step 1: Open the cartridge access door and remove all ink cartridges.
  • Step 2: Inspect the cartridges and the cartridge slots for any debris or damage.
  • Step 3: Reinstall the ink cartridges, ensuring they click into place securely.
  • Step 4: Close the cartridge access door.

3. Update Printer Firmware:

Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date.

  • Step 1: Go to the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
  • Step 2: Download and install the latest firmware update.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults:

Restoring the printer to factory defaults can resolve software issues.

  • Step 1: On the printer control panel, navigate to the "Setup" menu.
  • Step 2: Select "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools".
  • Step 3: Choose the "Restore" or "Factory Reset" option.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Ensure the Setup Cartridges are Installed:

If the printer is asking for setup cartridges, make sure they are actually present.

  • Explanation: The setup cartridges are special cartridges that originally came with your printer and are required for initial setup. If you still have them, reinstall them and complete the setup.

I hope this helps.
