Hello,

I recently installed HP DeskJet 2800e All in one Printer.  I keep getting a Event error 372 when I try printing.  When I go to the printer properties, when in print preview in word, all my printing shortcuts have locks on them.  My pc has Windows 11 pro on it.  I can, however print the Printer Reports from the HP Smart app.  Also I can print from my phone and tablet.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but when I did that my printer still showed up on the HP Smart app. Help!

Hello @RicGates and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Since you're able to print from your phone and tablet, and even print reports via the HP Smart app, we can confirm the printer itself is working fine. The issue seems to be with the Windows 11 PC configuration or driver setup. Let's walk through the steps to resolve Event Error 372 and the locked printing shortcuts in Word.

Remove Existing Printer Drivers Completely

Sometimes, remnants of previous installations can cause conflicts.

  1. Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  2. Right-click your HP DeskJet 2800e and select Remove device.
  3. Open Print Management:
    • Press Windows + R, type printmanagement.msc, and press Enter.
    • Go to Drivers > locate any HP DeskJet 2800e-related drivers and delete them.
    • If printmanagement.msc is not available, use Device Manager > Print queues to uninstall the printer.

Clear HP Smart App Cache (Optional but Recommended)

Even after uninstalling, HP Smart may retain cached printer info.

  • Open HP Smart > click on your printer > go to Advanced Settings > Remove Printer.
  • Sign out and sign back in to refresh the app.

Reinstall the Printer Using Full Feature Software

Use HP’s official installer to ensure all components are properly installed.

Official HP® Support

  • Run the installer and follow the prompts to set up your printer.
  • Ensure you select Wireless setup if you're using Wi-Fi.

Check Printing Shortcuts in Word

If shortcuts are still locked:

  • Open Word > go to File > Print > select your printer.
  • Click Printer Properties > check if you can access shortcuts.
  • If locked, try printing from Notepad or WordPad to isolate if it’s a Word-specific issue.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure your Windows 11 Pro is fully updated (Settings > Windows Update).
  • Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus or firewall software that might block printer communication.
  • Try printing from a different user account on your PC to rule out profile-specific restrictions.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
