I get and "invalid input" error no matter what password I try for a manual Wi-Fi Direct password.  Even trying the Automatic mode default password of 12345678 gives me "invalid input".  This is a new installation on a home network that was did not have an HP printer previously.  I am also getting the same error if I try to re-enable the Automatic mode.

@grumpyPants,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

Let's try to restore the printer to Network defaults:

1. From the Home screen, touch (Wireless), and then touch Settings .

2. Touch Restore Network Settings.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once done, Now try to set the password. You may make use of the User guide of your printer.

Chapter 8. Connect your printer - Page number 94

Alternatively, you can go to EWS page and try to reset the Wifi Direct password. You may refer to this support document for - HP Printers - Printing with Wi-Fi Direct (Scroll down to Frequently asked questions (FAQs))

Let me know how it goes for further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help you.

My HP Smart App has no "Wireless" option on either Windows 10 or IOS 11.   (I realize the User Manual also says that it does, but I beg to differ in regard to my version.)  When I click on this printer in the HP Smart app i get a menu of options, the closest of which is Network Settings.  There I can see the settings but there is also no "Wireless" option nor an option to reset anything to factor defaults.

 When I try to  access the Wi-Fi Direct/Status using the Embedded Web Server/Network on IOS I get a "This Connection is Not Private.  This website may be impersonating hpc46...Go Back" error.

When I use EWS under Windows10 any change I make to the Wi-Fi Direct settings results in the "Invalid Input"  error.  So currently, having re-read the user manual and tried repeatedly from my two different operating systems, I have my choice of leaving it WAO or turning it off completely.   It is completely unsatisfactory to have to leave this open port into my home network with a default password.
