Just because everyone should read their printer user guide --

 User Guide - HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e Wide Format All-in-One Series

The following is relevant to supported versions of Windows.

A few (not all) of the necessary reminders --

• The full driver installer is nearly 500MB -- small by today's system capacity standards -- Do make sure you have room for the installed software.
• No VPN during install -- At least switch off any VPN during the actual installation of the software.
• The printer and the device (your computer) need to be on the same network.
• You need an Administrator style user account to most install anything, including the full driver printer software.
• The printer supports installing the HP Universal Scan Software.  If you install the full driver, you need not install the separate Universal Scan Software.  The system will tolerate your doing so if you can't stand to go without.

Reinstall the full driver printer software

Short Version - (Re)Install Printer Software

If this is a re-installation,

• Uninstall the full driver printer software from Programs and Features or Settings > Apps > Installed Apps
• Restart the computer and sign in

Next,

• Scroll down to "Install full driver printer software" 

Details / How-to / Examples 

Check / Apply Windows Updates

• Check / Install any pending Windows Updates 
• If not done as part of Windows Updates, Restart your computer 

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

• Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
• If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
• Restart the computer and log in.

Install full driver printer software

• If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

• Open the Web Page
• Download, Save, and Install the software.
• If using a USB cable to connect the printer to your computer, connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the software installation process.
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

HP Universal Scan Software - Optional

Separately -- Supported on this printer and Windows 11

Installation of the HP Universal Scan Software adds an "HP Scan" self-named shortcut icon to the Desktop.

NOTE

If you have installed the full driver printer software,

And

If the HP Scan that is installed is the "new format" (larger GUI and new layout),

Then

In general, you perhaps do not need to install HP Universal Scan -- the version of HP Scan that installs with the software for this printer is a functional match to the HP Universal Software.

That said, if you can't stand it for any reason, the system will tolerate installing both the full driver and the HP Universal Scan software.

When the software is installed, HP Universal Scan Software adds a self-named HP Scan software shortcut to the Desktop.

Note

Where supported, HPUSS can be installed as standalone or installed after the full feature / full solution printer software.

If needful, choose a different OS > Open all

Find / Download / Save / Install HP Universal Scan – Full Feature Software and Driver Webpack 

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

            What about HP Scan?

After the installation of the printer software is complete -

The full driver will be listed in Programs and Features AND in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (Windows 11)

HP Containers / Desktop Shortcuts

Next,

• The full driver printer software will have added one or more "container" shortcuts on the Desktop:

• Printer Assistant - named for the printer model

OR

On newer printers and when the new full driver printer software no longer supports the Printer Assistant:

• Scan Assistant - named for itself

AND

• The full driver printer software, once installed, will have added a shortcut icon for HP Scan. 

NOTE > Model Dependent

The shortcut for HP Scan that is part of the full driver might be named for the printer model.
